"Disability" as stigma: A dehumanizing social view. A reading of its early incorporation in disability studies and its current validity for Latin America

El objetivo de este artículo, de naturaleza teórica, es analizar qué significa sociológicamente que la "discapacidad" es un estigma, pormenorizar las implicancias que tuvo la introducción de este concepto en las luchas por el reconocimiento de las personas con "discapacidad" en el siglo XX y reflexionar sobre su actual relevancia, especialmente para América Latina. Para ello, primero, se revisitan los aportes pioneros de Erving Goffman en los años 60 problematizando los vínculos "discapacidad" sociedad y se sugiere una lectura de la estigmatización como mirada social deshumanizante. Seguidamente, se describe su temprana recuperación en los Disability Studies, a través de la obra compilada por el pionero activista inglés Paul Hunt La experiencia del estigma (1966), considerado fundante del modelo social de la "discapacidad". Luego, se exponen las implicancias que tuvo esta introducción en el desarrollo de aquel campo de estudios y del activismo por los derechos de las personas con "discapacidad", en busca de su pleno reconocimiento. Finalmente, se realiza un balance de la contribución de este término para los estudios críticos en "discapacidad" latinoamericanos en la actualidad.The objective of this article, of a theoretical nature, is to analyze what it means sociologically that "disability" is a stigma, to detail the implications that the introduction of this concept had in the struggles for the recognition of people with "disabilities" in the century XX and reflect on its current relevance, especially for Latin America. For this, first, the pioneering contributions of Erving Goffman in the 1960s are revisited, problematizing the “disability” -society links, and a reading of stigmatization as a dehumanizing social view is suggested. Next, his early recovery is described in the Disability Studies, through the work compiled by the English activist Paul Hunt The experience of stigma (1966). Then, the implications of this introduction in the development of that field of study and the activism for the rights of people with "disabilities" are exposed, in search of their full recognition. Finally, a balance is made of the contribution of this term for the critical studies on "disability" in Latin America today.Fil: Ferrante, Carolina.
