El objetivo de este artículo, de naturaleza teórica, es analizar qué significa sociológicamente que la "discapacidad" es un estigma, pormenorizar las implicancias que tuvo la introducción de este concepto en las luchas por el reconocimiento de las personas con "discapacidad" en el siglo XX y reflexionar sobre su actual relevancia, especialmente para América Latina. Para ello, primero, se revisitan los aportes pioneros de Erving Goffman en los años 60 problematizando los vínculos "discapacidad" sociedad y se sugiere una lectura de la estigmatización como mirada social deshumanizante.
